Al Nassr have been eliminated from the Saudi King's Cup by Al Taawoun after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a crucial penalty in second-half stoppage time on Tuesday.
Since joining the club nearly two years ago, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has yet to secure a major trophy. The match, held at Al Awal Park in Riyadh, saw Al Taawoun take the lead in the 71st minute with a goal from Waleed Al-Ahmed.
In a dramatic turn, Al Nassr was awarded a penalty late in the game, but Ronaldo, who had previously converted all 18 penalties since arriving in the Saudi Pro League, sent his shot soaring over the bar.
This defeat marks the first for Stefano Pioli, who took over as head coach from Luis Castro in September. "Technically, we performed well, but we couldn't secure the win," Pioli stated. "We feel disappointed to be out of the cup, but we still have two trophies to compete for, and we will give our best in those."
Cristiano Ronaldo's season with Al Nassr has been a challenging one following a 1-0 defeat to Al-Taawoun in the Kings Cup round of 16:
- ⏳ Saudi Pro League: Ongoing
- ❌ Saudi Kings Cup: Eliminated
- ❌ Saudi Super Cup: Eliminated
- ⌛️ AFC Champions League: Awaiting
- ❌ Riyadh Season Cup: Eliminated
Will we ever see him clinch a major trophy in Saudi Arabia? Only time will tell!
